Improving asset management capabilities for solar power projects through the use of business intelligence and advanced control techniques is a trending business strategy within the solar industry sector. The current discussions centre on operational enhancement of utility-scale solar projects and are mainly driven by the need for improving the efficiency and reliability of the overall operation of the solar asset.
A number of technical issues exist in the industry that limits the deployment of renewable energy in significant quantities into the existing transmission and distribution infrastructure. Solar asset managers need to reduce operational costs while ensuring the optimal performance of their portfolio. Smarter asset management through advanced control techniques is one such technology for improving management of solar projects. Improved performance and reliability can be achieved by selectively applying control technology to minimize the associated cost impact. This paper examines how smarter asset management systems provide the basic tools and operational methodologies for effectively managing an organization's portfolio of solar assets.
