Abstract:

Integrated sensor solutions enable miniaturized smart electronic systems. Applications include wearables, smartphones or devices for the Internet of Things. These integrated sensor solutions can be used for position and motion detection, and environmental, human fitness, and health monitoring. Environmental sensors typically include gas, humidity, temperature and pressure sensors. Emerging sensor solutions include UV, gamma radiation and fine dust sensors with various physical detection principles being considered. Health and fitness sensing applications include heart rate, blood pressure and blood oxygen levels (SpO2), with most typically being realized by “loose fit” optical sensing principles.

This presentation will focus on sensor solutions for smart watches and smartphones having the most demanding requirements with respect to small form factors and low power consumption. Key requirements for these sensor solutions are the choice of sensing and systems integration technology. Trade-offs between optical and MEMS technologies and the potential of photonics will be discussed along with the benefits of wafer level, CMOS and 3D integration to meet form factor and performance needs. The presentation will include analysis along with product examples with a focus on sensing requirements in mobile applications.
