In 1851, the Abbey of Our Lady of Gethsemani was founded as the base for Trappist monk communities in the U.S. Located on 2,000 acres just south of Louisville, monks live a contemplative life of faithful prayer, work and silence. The Abbey was home to Father Thomas Merton, author of The Seven-Storey Mountain, which has been extensively praised in lists of the best books of the 20th century. Since its founding, the Abbey has welcomed guests for silent retreat including the current Dalai Lama, Civil War soldiers from both sides and your presenter, Barbara Kryvko.
