This session will present case studies of energy storage, with an emphasis on alternatives and where each alternative fits into a modern, comprehensive, integrated electrical system. Traditionally, conventional hydro and pumped storage have provided large-capacity and “economy of scale” energy storage for integrated electrical transmission systems. This session will have international and domestic panelists who present global views on energy storage and how large-scale storage can be best used in a modern electrical system. The panel will explore the combination of conventional hydro and pumped storage and other energy storage alternatives to work with other forms of generation, including intermittent renewables. Are conventional hydro and pumped storage are the best energy storage solutions to firm intermittent energy generation?
