Session 7B: Built to Last? Maximizing Project Value over Varying Lifespans (Room A105)

It takes 25 years to make a project economical, owners want 100 years out of their facilities, and, to further complicate design, there are 80-year-old facilities where owners want another 100 years out of the structure. This discussion will revolve around how to design new hydro structures that provide the maximum value to the owner rather than the maximum lifespan in an industry that historically designs projects to “last a lifetime”. Learn from engineers who will discuss the impacts of designing for a 100 year life on projects where the economic feasibility is based on a 40-year-life and get the owner’s insight on expectation of economics versus costs.
