The Side Effects of Translational Omics: Overtesting, Overdiagnosis, Overtreatment-34104 (Room Georgia World Congress Center - B308)

29 Jul 15
10:30 AM - 12:00 PM

Tracks: Emerging Technology, Evidence-based Medicine, Genomics, Integrated Diagnostics, Molecular Diagnostics, Multiplex Lab Test, Personalized Medicine, Proteomics

After this session, participants will be able to: 1) realize the limitations of screening asymptomatic individuals; 2) explain why new Omics technologies, when used for population screening, may lead to harm rather than benefits through overdiagnosis, and overtreatment; and 3) identify the side effects of overtesting, including incidental findings, indolent disease, and false positives.
