The application of strategic quality control in the laboratory can have substantial cost and efficiency benefit for many sites.  This workshop describes how Six Sigma concepts, and metrics such as moving averages, provide guidance for method validation, selecting statistical QC procedures, and formulating total QC strategies. Success stories will be shared from two premier facilities which resulted in significant reduction of outliers, reduced costs, and more efficient patient result reporting.  Implementation of moving averages for real-time monitoring of test performance, as well as database mining for long-term monitoring of test performance, helped identify and correct QC problems much more effectively.
