In 2015, Nanjing Iron & Steel Co. Ltd. (NISCO) started up a greenfield 800,000 t/year SBQ rolling mill. This ultra-modern mill is capable of producing straight bars up to 4 inches and coiled bars up to 1 1/4 inches. All sizes are capable of low-temperature rolling. This paper will present the challenges and successes of building a state-of-the-art bar mill that recognizes the need for quality and output to go hand in hand. The special training requirements as well as advanced design features will all be presented.
