The worldwide community of approximately 750,000 competitive swimmers and their coaches is waiting for a practical tool for measuring Instantaneous Swimming Velocity (ISV). The granularity of the most commonly used velocity measurements, the stopwatch and the pace clock, is no longer sufficient because they ignore ISV fluctuations within the stroke cycle. In our presentation, we review the known ISV measurement innovations, including our own, which is a machine vision-based solution. The intention of this presentation is to open the issue of ISV for discussion, and we look forward to creative cooperation from the audience.
