AREMA Committee 16 Panel Discussion – Train Length and Capacity Considerations (1 Hour) (Room 208-209)

Train length has become a topic of significance at North American Class I railroads in recent years. To leverage the possibilities of train length, numerous considerations must be taken into account, including the capability of existing (or planned) line and terminal facilities to handle various train sizes. Given the timely and evolving nature of this topic, Committee 16 proposes to hold a panel discussion at the 2017 AREMA conference as part of the Engineering Services presentation session similar to the panel discussions held in the Communications and Signals group session. A panel of five knowledgeable Committee members representing railroad and consultant perspectives, all with background in capacity planning, engineering and operations, have volunteered to participate. The primary goal of this panel is to provide different perspectives on the subject of train length and its impact on engineering planning and to stimulate interaction with the audience.
