3:40 PM - 5:10 PM

Tracks: Allied Health, Medical, Surgical

Moderator(s): Matthew Smuck, MD;

Moderator: Matthew Smuck, MD

What was once science fiction is now reality. Digital technologies are rapidly expanding into healthcare with anticipated exponential growth in the coming years. Their impact on spine care is broad, extending far beyond telemedicine. New motion-capture systems and sophisticated biosensors in common commercially available devices are now used by spine clinicians and researchers. Meanwhile, learning health systems leverage these new data sources alongside traditional medical information to guide personalized precision care. Still, a number of important challenges remain, such as integration of digital technologies into the EMR and physician workflow, streamlining analysis of large datasets, and validation of novel measures intended to augment or replace PROs. This session will overview the growing field of digital health technologies and describe how they are currently applied in the spine care setting with an eye toward the near future.

Upon completion of this session, participants should gain strategies to:

  • Discuss the current and anticipated future impact of digital technologies on spine care;
  • Recognize digital tools available to track and improve patient outcomes;
  • Review the role of digital technologies in orthopedics care;
  • Outline the benefits of learning health systems.
