This session will provide counselors with real-life examples of malpractice and licensure board complaints and tips for avoiding them. The format will combine lecture and group discussion. Topics will include confidentiality, privilege, and HIPAA/HITECH emerging technology concerns; subpoenas; reporting duties; records; private practice structure (e.g., independent contractor vs. employee status); finding an attorney; preparation for anticipated or emergency practice closure; custody case pitfalls; providing interpreters and aids for hearing-impaired clients; and boundary management.
