This ACA Institute prepares counselors to use specialized skills to assist those affected by disasters and mass traumatic events. Demonstrations and hands-on practice address: a) the impact of natural disasters, mass violence, and terrorism; b) psychological first aid; c) traumatic exposure and posttraumatic stress; d) cultural response; and e) self-care in deployment. Lessons learned from the Newtown school tragedy, Boston Marathon, earthquake in Haiti, Superstorm Sandy, and others are shared.
