Converting Low Temperature Waste Heat in Electricity using ORC Technology

Low temperature waste heat(water of 90 to 160°C, low pressure waste steam, exhaust gasses between 180°C to 300°C) is one of the most abundant energy sources available. However, up to recently it was very hard to convert it to electricity in an economical way for smaller sized ORC plants(lower than 1MW electrical). E-Rational found a solution for this by making a standardised configurable ORC machine with electrical power output between 50 and 500kWe. In the first section of this paper 3 case studies will be presented: 1. A geothermal application in Japan 2. A biomass burning application in Germany 3. An ORC add-on to reciprocating engines in Belgium In the second section of this paper we zoom in to some practical applications of this ORC technology in Asia, with a focus on the biggest opportunities and challenges for some of the SEA countries.
