Fromm® Family Foods Company History
More than a century ago, Fromm® Family Foods established its legacy as the country’s first premium pet food company, earning the reputation as an industry leader. Since 1904 the Fromm family has pioneered advances in pet nutrition and animal health, establishing a tradition of quiet innovation while producing only the highest-grade pet foods made with exceptional ingredients.
In the 1930’s Fromm Family introduced the first canine distemper vaccine, a method of disease prevention that has since been adopted as standard for general pet care. Next, the Fromm family began focusing on perfecting nutrition for dogs and cats. In 1948 the late Dr. Willard Roberts, Ph. D and chief nutritionist created the very first generation of Fromm Family Nutritionals® pet foods. Dr. Roberts is often recognized as the father of modern pet foods, having pioneered the process of producing the dry granular food that is so popular today.
Based in Wisconsin, Fromm Family Foods is a fifth-generation family-owned and operated business. Since its beginning, Fromm has partnered with leading veterinarians, biochemists, research specialists and food production engineers to develop a broad unique range of specialty pet foods. This commitment to superior product also follows through to the retail end as Fromm products are sold exclusively at neighborhood pet retailers worldwide.
In 1984, Tom Nieman took the reins of the family business. Nieman studied under Dr. Roberts and continued the family mission, developing new food formulas and expanding the brand to what it is today.
Today Fromm Family Foods specializes in artisan pet food products with three distinct food lines for dogs and cats that include Fromm Classic, Gold and Four-Star Nutritionals. The Classic line pays homage to the original family recipe and includes chicken, whole eggs and real cheese. Fromm Gold Nutritionals® line provides a balanced diet designed for each life stage and life style from puppy to senior.
The Four-Star Nutritionals® line is Fromm’s gourmet line offering a collection of variety-driven dry pet foods, canned foods and treats using high-quality meats, fish fruits and vegetables. Each gourmet entreĢe features a different meat or fish, and because each recipe has a similar blend of ingredients, switching between entrees often is encouraged, giving animals a variety and unparalleled tastes.
From the very start Fromm Family Foods has been dedicated to perfecting nutrition for animals, delivering artisan blends with state-of-the-art practices. This driving force will steer the brand into the future, as Fromm continues to develop its unique product lines, integrating new treats, canned and dry food formulas to an already exceptional collection.
Today Fromm proudly owns three manufacturing facilities in Wisconsin where their products are meticulously manufactured using a combination of state-of-the-art facilities with time-honored family traditions. These family- owned-and-operated facilities will allow Fromm to keep pace with rapid growth while maintaining 100 percent family ownership of the company and preserving the commitment to the neighborhood pet retailer.
