Filming for the episode took place during this past summer’s Native American Basketball Invitational (NABI) which featured 128 teams (from grades 10-12), comprised of athletes representing over 300+ tribes from North America, Canada and New Zealand. Religion of Sports film crews followed one of the teams from Alaska on their journey to NABI and continued to follow the tournament and teams in their quest to win the prestigious NABI Championship trophy, and more importantly learn about the many higher educational opportunities the NABI Foundation provides. “This is a great opportunity for our Native youth to be highlighted and for the public to learn more about their talents, accomplishments and the struggles that plague them and their communities. We are hoping it will urge people to get more involved in NABI’s mission so we can continue to provide much needed programs and services to all our Native youth” says GinaMarie Scarpa President & CEO NABI Foundation.

Every year the conclusion and highlight of the tournament is when the final four teams take to the floor on the Phoenix Suns/Phoenix Mercury court and step where NBA and WNBA superstars play to win the NABI Championship. The Phoenix Suns, Phoenix Mercury and Talking Stick Resort Arena have been involved with the NABI Foundation since NABI’s inception in 2003 and continues to be instrumental in supporting our Native youth and communities.

NABI continues to be the largest premier basketball tournament showcasing Native American and indigenous youth in North America and the first to become certified by the NCAA.

In 2019; the NABI Foundation will host their first NABI Educational Youth Summit in conjunction with the NABI tournament scheduled for June 23-29. The summit will expand on the educational components of the NABI tournament to include: College & Career Fair, Educational Seminars, Workshops, Motivational Speakers, Prevention Education and will award over $20,000 in college scholarships.
