Why wear Australian merino wool? Introducing Tradition Textiles at NY NOW

It’s all about microns! The Australian merino wool that Tradition Textiles uses to weave their collection of scarves is 16-17 microns so very fine and soft. While this quality wool is light it is also very warm.

The wool fibre is a complex structure that, believe it or not, behaves remarkably like our skin; naturally cooling and heating as the body needs.Predominantly made of interlocking protein molecules known as keratin, the same protein present in our own skin and hair, individual wool fibres have the ability to be bent, flexed and stretched in any direction. In addition, wool fibres have a natural curl called the “fibre crimp” which improves the elasticity and over all resilience.

Merino wool fibres are smaller in diameter than other wool. Being finer these fibres are more flexible and softly bend when pressed against the skin and, therefore, don’t itch like other wool. And, of course as a natural fibre will not wrinkle like synthetics.

After weaving many of the scarves are printed with designs by Tradition Textiles’ Deborah Emmett, with new designs created every year. As one of Tradition Textiles’ happy customers wrote, “Wow, what a gorgeous scarf. Rich, saturated colours; soft, light-as-air fabric with a faint sheen that drapes beautifully - this is the perfect scarf for any time of the year. Couldn’t be happier!”

And for the home Tradition Textiles has a range of woven Australian merino wool throws in geometric and paisley designs. The throws are woven in Kashmir, India using a special technique where the colours are reversed on each side of the throw. A great addition to the sofa or bed for a splash of colour as well as a cosy companion.
