Austin, Texas, January 9, 2019: Seventy percent of Cambodian women work in vulnerable employment. Vulnerable employment can include anything from abuse to unfair wages to unsafe working conditions. Cambodia, a small country located between Vietnam and Thailand, is recovering from a genocide that ended in the late 70s. This genocide was the 3rd deadliest in human history, approximately 1/4th of the population brutally murdered, yet it’s barely spoken of or taught about in American schools.
As the Cambodian people continue to work to rebuild and recover, their grace and resilience is breaking through. Collective Humanity, a nonprofit organization based in Austin, Texas, partners with female artisan groups throughout Cambodia to create demand for their products, and to help them generate sustainable, consistent, and dignified sources of income.
This September, Collective Humanity celebrated two years as a 501(c)(3). Collective Humanity has grown to support the fair wage employment of over 45 artisans in 3 different regions throughout Cambodia, increasing the artisans earnings by 120%.
“We believe the most valuable role we can play in helping Cambodia rebuild is by facilitating economic opportunities for women,” says founder and Executive Director, Kate Davis. “We are taking a new approach to international aid, working to provide the women with opportunities to change their own lives. When you invest in women, you uplift the entire community.”
