WATERLOO, ON, CA, September 19, 2018 – Dr. Zhou Wang, an Emmy Award winning expert on viewer experience measurement and a scheduled speaker at SCTE•ISBE Cable-Tec Expo 2018, has been named as the newest fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (RSC), a 135-year old organization in which scholars are peer-selected for exception contributions in their fields.
Dr. Wang, who serves as University Research Chair and Professor at the University of Waterloo in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, is world-renowned for his transformative work in video quality assurance and received a PrimeTime Engineering Emmy Award for his groundbreaking work on the Structural Similarity (SSIM) video quality algorithm. Dr. Wang serves as Chief Science Officer of SSIMWAVE, a Canadian firm that is bringing next-generation SSIM solutions to the cable, media and entertainment markets.
At SCTE•ISBE Cable-Tec Expo, Dr. Wang will deliver a presentation entitled “Begin with the end in Mind: A Unified End-to-End Quality-of-Experience Monitoring, Optimization and Management Framework.” The presentation is part of the “How to Enhance QoE for Video and WiFi Services” workshop scheduled for Monday, October 22 at 2:15 p.m. ET at the Georgia World Congress Center.

Dr. Wang is one of the world’s most cited authors in visual perception-based image quality assessment, processing and compression. His innovative work created a paradigm change in the imaging field and has been used for video quality assurance throughout the global media delivery industry, directly affecting millions of viewers daily. His work led to the creation of the American Society of Cinematographers SSIMWAVE technical working group that focuses on HDR evaluation. He is a Fellow of Canadian Academy of Engineering and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and a recipient of NSERC Steacie Memorial Fellowship and Primetime Engineering Emmy Award. Dr. Wang was named to the RSC’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists in 2015.
“Professor Wang’s unique approach to research in imaging has not only made a significant impact on his students but has been a key driver in the success of SSIMWAVE,” said Pearl Sullivan, dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Waterloo. “It is a thrill to see him elected to the Royal Society of Canada.”
