EnerSys® PowerSafe® SBS and SBS XL Batteries Provide Long-Lasting Solutions for High-Temperature Telecom and Cable Applications

EnerSys® (NYSE:ENS), the global leader in stored energy solutions for industrial applications, offers PowerSafe® SBS and SBS XL batteries, specifically designed for the telecommunications and cable industries. Developed to accommodate varying temperature and budget requirements, both batteries are manufactured with proprietary Thin Plate Pure Lead (TPPL) technology, provide high-energy density and long life, and offer different designs to meet the requirements of unique applications and operating environments.

“The demand for digital information has put new strains on telecom and cable suppliers, including a rise in cooling costs due to higher heat caused by an increased density of communication equipment,” said Grant Grunewald, marketing manager, telecommunications at EnerSys. “Based on more than 100 years of engineering expertise, PowerSafe® SBS and SBS XL batteries provide customers with the technology they need to meet today’s industry demands.”

The efficient, resilient PowerSafe® SBS battery is intended for high-heat applications of up to 122°F (50°C). With a high tolerance to elevated temperatures, the PowerSafe® SBS battery enables longer service life for wireless and fixed-line communication applications, as well as cable TV, emergency lighting, power generation and offshore applications. The PowerSafe® SBS battery also offers compatibility with a wide range of enclosures and racks located in remote locations where high temperatures and maintenance are an issue.  They also fit well in Central Office and Data Center applications.  PowerSafe® SBS batteries offer a 10-year life expectancy in float service at 77°F (25°C).

For more extreme temperatures and operating conditions, the PowerSafe® SBS XL battery is an effective solution. Its operating range of -40°F (-40°C) to 149°F (65°C) allows end users to lower their cooling costs by raising ambient temperature at the operating site through higher set points or free-air cooling. Additionally, the 10-year design life of the PowerSafe® SBS XL battery at a continuous 95°F (35°C), and its 20-year design life at a continuous 77°F (25°C), greatly extends the time between required battery replacements and helps reduce the number of service calls to remote locations. It is intended for stable grid float applications and features an industry-standard footprint, which allows its use in existing racks and cabinets.

The PowerSafe® SBS and SBS XL batteries are designed for stable grid float applications. Due to their Valve Regulated Lead Acid (VRLA) design, they do not require a separate battery room and can be mounted in any orientation except inverted. Engineered based on the most rigorous EnerSys standards, the PowerSafe® SBS and SBS XL batteries feature an industry-standard footprint, which allows their use in existing racks and cabinets. The Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) material and specially designed pressure relief valves work together to prevent dry-out, a key failure mode for VRLA batteries. The container and lids are UL94V-0 rated flame retardant PC-ABS material that is highly resistant to elevated temperatures, shocks and vibrations.
