CORPORATE BACKGROUNDER

LISBON, Portugal The most intriguing home furnishings tell a story. For Bunakara, that story is about a special sense of place and purpose.  Bunakara creates a unique line of home furnishings that blend the simple with the luxurious. While others simply mix old and new, Bunakara incorporates into each design the emotions, the history and the knowledge of the past with the present.

Years ago, when renowned Portuguese interior designer Joana Aranha was in New Delhi, she cupped a small, vivid red flower in her hands. In it, she saw the beginnings of Bunakara. She envisioned creating products that – in her years of traveling the world – were those things she looked for and could not find.

During that serendipitous moment in New Delhi, gazing at what later would inspire her signature Flower of India motif, Aranha realized she could design what she was looking for. Bunakara, which means “weaver” in Hindi, handcrafts furniture, home accents and textiles with a distinctive sense of place and purpose.

Using beautifully authentic materials, such as acacia wood, cotton, linen, natural dyes and sand-cast brass, Bunakara artisans devotedly craft each piece of furniture in India, with special attention to details.   There’s an undeniable whimsy, too, that makes Bunakara all the more delightful – an iconic single painted chair leg, an intricate sand-cast brass ferrule on an acacia table leg, delicate hand-applied lace appliqués or brass buttons on a tufted sofa. All the pieces also feature Bunakara’s signature, a beaded Flower of India insignia.  Her designs are so special and unique that many are copyrighted.

In homage to Bunakara’s tagline, Discover What Can’t Be Found, most pieces, such as the inner core of many pillows, the bottom of the chairs or the inside of some of the drawers carry the secret message, “Not Be Found.”

Joana, a designer herself, specially curated Bunakara for retailers and designers who appreciate sophisticated, handcrafted design that is difficult to find today. From the soul of an artist, through the hands of many artisans, to the homes of those with a sophisticated and artistic sense of style, Bunakara helps others discover what can’t be found.

Bunakara, a unique line of upscale furniture, home accents and textiles blends the simple with the luxurious. Handcrafted in India using beautifully authentic, natural materials, products are designed by Joana Aranha, an international Portuguese designer of residential and commercial interiors and home furnishings. Bunakara, which means “weaver” in Hindi, is specially curated for retailers and designers who appreciate sophisticated, hand crafted design with unexpected details. Her designs are so special and unique that many are copyrighted.
