Vetrerie di Empoli, the company known throughout the world for its fine artisanal glassware, available in Milan at its shop at 22 via Montenapoleone, announces a genuine breakthrough: the “Gira e rigira” glass.

"Gira e rigira" is a wine tasting glass that revolutionizes the process of judging and assessing wine.

That special swirling movement that is made when wine is poured into a glass, gently rotating the glass to analyze its characteristics, is revisited by this new vessel, patented by the proprietor of Vetrerie di Empoli, Franco Parentini, who designed this unique glass.

A small pin, "camouflaged" in glass or purposely highlighted in golden metal, placed at the tip of the stem and the base of the bowl, permits a slight caress of the thumb applied to the outside of the glass to make the glass rotate delicately, smoothly swirling the wine inside.

This rotation permits a better evaluation of the visual characteristics (limpidity, color and consistency), the olfactory notes (complexity and pleasantness) and the gustatory sensations (sweetness, acidity, saltiness and tannins) conveyed by the wine.

"It’s a simple idea”, says Franco Parentini, “that springs from the intimacy Italians share with wine and with the acts performed in drinking it, which not everyone is familiar with: from smelling its bouquet to swirling it in the glass . “Gira e rigira” lets you decant the wine with an elegant gesture, while sting at the table and conversing. A natural, elegant movement, that at one stroke eliminates the fear of seeming either inadequate or snobbish.”

Presented to sector experts in Milan, at "Design Week", “Gira e rigira” is finally being presented to the press in May, with a communication campaign overseen by Oliviero Toscani.

"It’s a beautiful design object in itself”, Toscani says, “but the important thing is its utility. Functional design is a revolutionary concept these days, in a world of utensils in abstruse shapes whose raison d’être lies in the signature of their designer, but which have little practical value. This is the marriage of a genial idea and artisanal excellence, a truly valid match."

VETRERIE DI EMPOLI was founded in Empoli, Tuscany, in 1938. Initially it produced the characteristic green glass typical of the area, but as time passed, it began to make increasingly sophisticated products.

The Parentini family, proprietors of the Vetrerie, operate the shop at 22 via Montenapoleone, in Milan, an international point of reference for those who dedicate time and attention to the art of table settings.

Today, Vetrerie di Empoli has established an enviable reputation in the “luxury” sector, thanks to the refinement of its highly artisanal collections, featuring both classic and contemporary design.
