Elly Lu is a new organic and eco-friendly Brand, inspired by the coastal towns of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii and Oxnard, California where the owners have lived. Their goal is to create organic and non-toxic toys made ethically that are used to promote a greater cause. The business was started by two sisters-in-law who were looking for more organic toy choices for their own children that were also cute, whimsical, and trendy. This gave them the idea for Elly Lu: a toy shop that creates organic, sustainable, and eco-friendly toys that are free of toxins, GMO's, and harmful dyes. Their toys are ethically manufactured in registered "Garments without Guilt" factories meaning there is no child labor or forced labor used and that all employees are paid fair wages while working in a healthy work environment. The Elly Lu owners have personally visited the factories in Sri Lanka and have witnessed first-hand their factory's ethical work environment.
Giving back is an important part of this family run business. As young parent's, teaching their children about being generous and giving to those in need is an invaluable lesson. They have decided to make this a part of their business model in hopes to educate and instill the spirit of generosity in all their customers. For every purchase, they will be donating $1 to a charitable cause that is related to the toy in some way. They give back to charities that support children in need or rehabilitate threatened and endangered animals. For example, if a stuffed arctic animal is purchased, the store will donate $1 to the Alaska Sea Life Center in Seward, Alaska.
Elly Lu’s stuffed animals will also serve as educational tools; each toy is accompanied by a tag which has a “fun fact” about the animal it depicts. And the store also plans to introduce books in its online catalog, which will encourage younger children to read. In an interview, one of the founders stated her educational vision for the start-up:
“We chose to create a line of endangered animals to raise awareness and educate children about the wonderful organizations devoted to helping protect these animals. We hope children will fall in love with the actual animals as much as their stuffed ones!”
