Colleen Attara Studio Bio

I am a storyteller.

I tell my stories through torn photographs,

paint, thread and words.

I take almost every photo you see in the line (sometimes I will use someone else’s photos of children or babies, as my children are now 19 and 22). All the photos are from my life; roads I travel, footprints left by my husband and I on the beach, coffee we drink at a diner, the stone barn outside my studio. Every single card has a story in both the pictures and the words. Some of the words I write with my son or daughter in mind. Like “Superman” or “Detour”. They may not say son or daughter, but these are ones other parents are drawn to also for their children. I love that.

When I write a card I am always thinking about someone I know or love. I think that is why they really pull at people’s hearts. Some of the words are new, while others I wrote long ago in journals.

When I have an idea, I start to play with the design. I tear pictures in half, change the composition, and stitch them back together. I sew in my words and all the little bits and pieces that fall to the side of my studio desk or below it. Then I add paint and some vintage finds and let the colorful threads fall where they may.

I love the serendipity of how each card comes together. Each one begins as an original piece of art.

I have a studio in my home that is where all my cards are organized and stored. Then I have another studio in a stone cottage in Bucks County, Pennsylvania built in the late 1600’s where I create and visually get my ideas out.

I love what I do. Knowing that I can help people express an emotion to someone else is so rewarding to me. I think this is the work I was born to do
