Machfu Releases the MACH-3 Gateway to Bring Sensors and Controllers as DNP Devices to SCADA and the Cloud

Industrial Internet-of-Things Company Machfu becomes member of Distributed Network Protocol (DNP) organization

Machfu’s expertise in Smart Grid will let Utilities simplify the complex problem of secure system integration of legacy devices and modern sensors to the cloud and SCADA across private and public networks

Germantown, MD (January 22, 2018) - Machfu, today announced that they have joined the DNP organization, a forum for supporters of the Distributed Network Protocol. The development of DNP3 was a comprehensive effort to achieve open, standards-based interoperability between substation outstations and master stations for the electric utility industry. Since its inception, DNP3 has also become widely utilized in adjacent industries such as water/waste water, transportation and the oil and gas industry.

With the advances that Machfu has made in the IIoT protocol translation between various devices and head-end systems, happening at the edge, Machfu’ s addition to the DNP roster affirms the commitment to the DNP protocol and the DNP Organization portfolio of members. By using a secure sandboxed application space, the Machfu edge Gateway, removes many of the traditional and costly barriers to implementing IIoT.

There are many practical applications and benefits for the MACH-3 IIoT Gateway in the energy industry.  “Using Machfu’s industrial hardened gateway, utilities and OEMs can represent sensor as a DNP object to the head-end or SCADA system” said Chinmay Shete, Director of Embedded Systems, Machfu. Specifically, the gateway addresses real use cases in the industry by supporting the complete DNP3 stack. This allows the OEMs and utilities to:

  • Create virtual DNP representation of non-DNP devices, thereby enabling both types of devices to be controlled using a common head-end SCADA application
  • Enable controlling of serial DNP devices over public or private networks from TCP/UDP DNP SCADA head-end applications
  • Connect DNP (and non-DNP) devices to cloud platforms, thereby enabling these devices to be controlled using HMI applications in the cloud.

“The Gateway can act as a DNP master or Outstation or both simultaneously. The Gateway also provides a secure cellular overlay to existing private networks.  The flexibility and versatility of the platform is its greatest asset” added Tim Winter, CTO of Machfu.
