Fresh Summit 2017

Guatemala: 30 years displaying its agriculture products at the PMA Fresh Summit

Guatemala, October 13, 2017. For thirty consecutive years, Guatemalan agriculture exporters have participated in the PMA Fresh Summit, the most important agriculture event in North America. The fair has been an important platform for non-traditional agriculture products like snow and sweet peas, mangoes and berries to display with international consumers and position the country as key supplier of fresh products worldwide.

These three decades of participation at the PMA Fresh Summit has helped to create a good image for Guatemala as an exporter of agriculture products due to good characteristics of its products such as color, flavor, freshness and implementation of best social and environmental practices. Exports of peas, broccoli, green beans, melons, watermelons, mangoes, ornamentals and others have located Guatemala as the fourth main exporter of fresh products to the US market, stated Mr. Estuardo Castro, president of the Agritrade Platfrom of AGEXPORT.

The 2017 edition of the PMA Fresh Summit will take place on October 20 and 21 and AGEXPORT organized an 80-member delegation to represent the entire offer of agriculture products and related services. The companies integrating this delegation are: Aliar, Coprisa, Frutesa, Frutico, Flores Bohemia, Agrocumbre, Cooperative Agrícola Integral Cuatro Pinos, Asocafé Pochuta, Logidoc, Maxim, FIDA, AIMAR, APL, SIESA, Homeland, Agroindustrias Del Trópico, San Juan Agroexport, El Labrador, FONAGRO, Grupo El Tesoro, Corporación Occidental, COMBEX IM, UPS and Agribolsa; as well as representatives from the Peas and Ornamentals commissions of AGEXPORT.

According to Mr. Castro, Guatemala’s participation in this international fair has contributed the establishment of the United States as a key partner for Guatemala. Nowadays, the country exports to the US more than US$1.1 billion in vegetables and fresh fruits yearly.

During these 30 years, as exporters and visitors of these fair, we have been able to meet with industry leaders, improve our relations with suppliers, gather important decision-making information; all these with the objective of developing more businesses. To achieve this, we expanded our country stand at the fair, going from 540 sq.ft. to 1,075 sq.ft. We are also displaying for the first time our “Guatemala Beyond Expectations” brand, explained Mr. Castro.

Guatemala’s 2017 delegation grew by 75% due to the participation of 50 companies that seek to generate more than 200 business meetings. This, added to the agriculture and IT companies that offer services for agricultural processes, stated the President of AGRITRADE.
