Intarsia boxes or puzzle boxes as they are currently called are not known for quality, rather a cheap trinket you get on vacation…. Jelly Roll Box is changing that. By combining tradition craftsmanship methods with modern woodworking techniques they are able to mass produce pieces with unprecedented detail and quality. Along with the creepy stuff they produce several categories including Music, Dragons, Insects, Fish, reptile, Dogs, Maps, Birds, Sports, Motorcycles, Angels and more.
I asked CEO Gary Gould “what sets your boxes apart from other box makers?
When its personnel it’s easy to do something special. From the start my focus was on design but I knew in order to make a better product I would have to use better wood and provide strong overseas technical support to mass produce such detailed pieces. When I first suggested we use Beachwood instead of Acadia my production partner was shocked. Why would you raise your prices so high for the same item? Simply put, Acadia…the low end grade used in puzzle boxes takes stain and dye's well but simply does not hold up over time and its soft heavy moisture qualities impedes its ability to be carved in any detail. To add to this challenge our boxes have a hidden key feature incorporated into the design so at first glance you would not be able to see the key…almost all of our boxes have this features.
What’s next? We are exploring licensing option with a variety of outlets including college football, major league Baseball. After a decade as an on-line seller we are interested in developing retail relationship and will be attending NY NOW Booth 5013 August 19-23
