Spine Innovation Expandable Interbody Fusion Cage Implanted for First Time
San Diego, CA – (March 13, 2017) Spine Innovation LLC announced today the completion of the first implantations of the Spine Innovation Expandable TLIF device.
The first surgery was performed by Drs. James Bruffey and Robert Eastlack at the Scripps Healthcare System in La Jolla, CA, on Thursday, February 15th. Dr. Bruffey commented on the benefits of the device. “The implant provides up to 15 degrees of lordosis, to accommodate the lower lumbar levels and leaves a large volume free for bone graft,” and Dr. Eastlack added, “The volume of graft one can place outside and inside the cage is dramatically larger than typical expandables.”
Additional surgeries have been completed across the United States. Dr. S. Babak Kalantar, Chief of Orthopedic Spine Surgery at MedStar Georgetown University Medical Center, implanted the device recently and praised it for its simple, intuitive instrument set and ease of use.
The Spine Innovation Expandable TLIF implant is inserted on its side to minimize the risk of neural injury during insertion, and is rotated 90° to restore disc height up to 16mm and lordosis up to 15°. The implant is then expanded 10mm laterally to create an implant width of up to 22mm with a large, 10x26mm graft area that is directly accessible by the surgeon for placement of bone graft in the device. The innovative device increases the implant profile in height, lordotic angle and footprint in situ. The aperture is among the largest of all expandable TLIF interbody devices available today.
