NECA 2015 San Francisco

“BIMalytical” at NECA

San Francisco, CA. (Sep 15, 2015) - BIM is continuing to expand and adapt as it becomes a common feature in design and construction projects across the globe. As technology develops, as practices become 'Processes', and processes become 'Mechanisms', you will agree that we are living in an exciting time, watching it all unfold around us and being a part of an intensive period of change.

Moving into Electrical, we have identified 4 (maybe 5!!!) BIM trends, not tied to some specific software or hardware technology that can help you keep your competitive edge. We think you will see the following trends grow, mature, and become commonplace in the coming years:

  • Powerful Analytics
  • Enhanced Collaboration
  • True Cloud BIM
  • The Real Value of Information
  • What is number 5?

Powerful Analytics

“Data! Data! Data! I can’t make bricks without clay!” — Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Whether you realize it or not, some aspect of your life is driven by data. We rely on smart phones for minute-by-minute social media updates from our friends and we check the weather app before venturing outside.

There can be no doubt that the architectural design process has become more and more ‘datafied’ as new technology makes its presence felt.  If CAD turned drawings digital, then BIM made buildings virtual.

People may ask “why BIM?” and the apt answer is “analytics”.

With the enormous need for infrastructure developments and demonstrated benefits of BIM for more complex projects, its usage is justified.

Enhanced Collaboration

One of the greatest benefits of collaborative BIM tools and techniques is the opportunity to construct a project in a virtual world before the actual construction begins, minimizing costly errors and reworks.

Collaboration is not a new thing, but the identifiable trends are becoming increasingly important for business parameters. It used to be an “idea” that worked sometimes and sometimes didn’t.

But seems like, the real-time model based collaboration is becoming a reality, partly enabled by...

True Cloud BIM

So, what happens when BIM processes enter the cloud? First, some of the traditional challenges that AEC firms encounter when implementing BIM are neatly sidestepped. Frequently, this occurs as a result of model collaboration, as well as the well-known limitations of desktop computing power to handle data-heavy models.

For example, BIM360 and other cloud BIM platforms give teams the opportunity to share, view, and comment on, markup and update models quickly. If you haven't looked into any of these 'cloud BIM' services yet, now is really the time to do so.

The Real Value of 'Information

Along with BIM Maturity, businesses are finding better opportunities for selling. We are knowledge workers or 'Information' workers and we sell information – it's our value proposition. It also happens to be embedded in all of our models. The more information-rich our models are the more valuable they become.

This might raise many questions about what is information, how effectively we can model information, what is the value of our BIMs, how do we measure their value, (erm … did we mention Analytics...)?

Future BIM Projects will not just be about better BIM, but also about trading, buying, and selling that Information.
