Exact slab profile and dimension measurement

Not many providers by means of laser measuring technology are able to integrate measuring accuracy of several components to one total software-based and –controlled system. The measurement systems are individually developed for steel production and their adjustable core structure is designed so much that hot slabs with a temperature of up to 1300° C can be measured two-lane in their thickness and single-lane in their width.

Distance measurements are undertaken with laser distance meters which are mounted into special housings or measurement frames. These frames allow adjustments for the slabs on different thicknesses or widths. The housings are cooled by water or air in order to ensure the operation in hot environments at steel production.

Triangulation laser scanners

The measurement system detects the length either with incremental rotary encoders or also with velocimeters. A system for the measurement of slab width and slab profile consists of for example two triangulation laser scanners. These scanners are mounted on both sides of the roller table and measure on the long side of the slabs. This two-dimensional measurement is made without any contact by an oscillating measuring beam.

The raw data of the laser sensors, like e.g. the distance or angle, are forwarded to a measuring computer by LASE for evaluation. Slabs can also be measured when driving in oblique position through the measurement system because the software is able to compensate for those positions automatically. Based on these highly accurate and real-time position data both the roller table is controlled and the slab can be positioned exactly. Thus collisions can be prevented before or even after the furnace.
