Wild Planet Foods Releases Wild Mackerel Fillets and Expands Into Land Based Products with Release of Organic Roasted Chicken

Holy Mackerel—Wild Planet Does it Again!

Wild Mackerel Fillets are a Fresh New Way to Eat Sustainably

MCKINLEYVILLE, CA Wild Planet Foods, leading provider of sustainable seafood, is proud to introduce its new Wild Mackerel Fillets. Canned using only mackerel, organic extra virgin olive oil, water and sea salt, these Wild Mackerel Fillets can be enjoyed on your favorite cracker, used as you would use tuna, or eaten directly out of the can!

Wild Planet’s skinless and boneless Wild Mackerel Fillets are delicately textured with somewhat of a tuna flavor. Packed with 13 grams of protein and only 100 calories per serving, this fish is an outstanding source of both iron and Omega 3. In addition, because Mackerel is an underutilized species and is relatively low on the food chain, it is considered one of the best choices in terms of sustainability.

Wild Planet sources this wild, superabundant North Pacific fish with single-species targeted purse seine fishing — without the use of FADs (Fish Aggregating Devices).

"We want to provide our customers with more sustainable options that go beyond traditional seafood staples like tuna, salmon and shrimp," said Wild Planet Foods’ Founder Bill Carvalho. "Since mackerel is one of the healthiest and most sustainable fish in the ocean, it was definitely a clear choice."

The Wild Mackerel Fillets will be available for an SRP of $3.29 at natural food and select traditional grocery stores nationwide, as well as via www.wildplanetfoods.com.

Land Ho! Wild Planet Foods Embarks on Land-Based Products

Leading Sustainable Seafood Company Releases Free Range Organic Roasted Chicken

McKinleyville, Ca Wild Planet Foods, the leading provider of sustainable seafood most known for its commitment to ethical sourcing and protecting our oceans, is pleased to announce its off-sea venture into the development of land-based food with the launch of its new Organic Roasted Chicken Breast.

Moving from fin to feather, the new Organic Roasted Chicken Breast is the first non-seafood item in Wild Planet’s line. While this is a new category for the company, the addition fits harmoniously with Wild Planet’s mission to provide consumers with food options that are healthful for the body and wildly good for our planet. Wild Planet’s Organic Roasted Chicken Breast features USDA Certified Organic Free-Range Chicken raised on an organic diet — featuring Non-GMO corn grown on land that is free of chemicals fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides.

“Our new chicken, along with all future land-based items that will follow from Wild Planet Foods, is sourced from organically operated farms— which is essentially the land-based equivalent of pole and line fishing,” said Founder of Wild Planet Foods, Bill Carvalho. “At Wild Planet, we believe there is really no difference between being a steward of the land as well as the sea. It’s a known fact that chemical runoff from conventional farming practices has had a negative effect on our waterways which ultimately lead to our oceans — creating dead zones that make it impossible for sea life to survive. Offering products like our new Roasted Chicken Breast not only allows Wild Planet the privilege of supporting and advocating for organic farms and farmers,  but it’s also a step towards keeping our waterways and oceans healthy and supportive of a viable, healthy marine environment.”

Wild Planet’s new Organic Roasted Chicken Breast contains only two ingredients — chicken seasoned with sea salt.  There is also a no salt added version available. Wild Planet Organic Roasted Chicken Breast provides 40% more chicken than other 5 oz. can offerings, due to the fact that only Wild Planet roasts their chicken without the addition of added water, liquids or fillers that are commonly found in other brands.   The flavorful, natural juices remain to provide a delicious rotisserie taste.   This new Organic Roasted Chicken Breast can be used to make sandwiches, soups, burritos, and is an especially great salad topper.

Wild Planet’s Organic Roasted Chicken is packed in cans that do not contain BPA in the lining or lid, and will be available nationwide in supermarkets and natural food stores across the country for an MSRP of $5.49 in November. Greenpeace Ranks Wild Planet Foods As #1 Tuna Brand for Sustainability

Wild Planet Challenges Top Tuna Brands to Switch to Sustainable Fishing Methods

McKinleyville, CaThis week, Greenpeace, an international environmental organization working towards a green and peaceful future, honored Wild Planet Foods by ranking them as the most sustainable and ethical tuna brand in the U.S.

With strict quality control from hook to shelf, Wild Planet’s mission has been to produce safe, nutritious, great-tasting and sustainably-caught seafood since 2001. With harvesting practices 100% compliant with the Best Choices for Sustainability recommendations of Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch, all of Wild Planet’s tuna products are sustainably caught using pole and line or troll caught fishing methods.

Wild Planet is grateful to be recognized in the Greenpeace ranking as a “go-to eco-brand, topping the ranks for its dedication to ensuring its tuna products are sustainable and responsible.” In accepting this recognition, Wild Planet pledges to continue providing high-quality, sustainable tuna while raising industry awareness and educating consumers about sustainable practices.

“When I read that many popular tuna brands have made the promise to go sustainable sometime in the future, I wonder why wait?” said Bill Carvalho, founder of Wild Planet Foods. “We’ve been using sustainable fishing methods since our inception in 2001— always have, always will. I am known for saying: it’s an ocean planet, as the oceans go, so goes the planet. Our oceans and their diverse life forms cannot and should not have to wait for brands to decide to do the right thing. Wild Planet would like to use this opportunity to implore brands like Bumble Bee, StarKist and Chicken of the Sea to get on board and switch to sustainable fishing methods.”

Follow the Leader: #1 Tuna Brand Spreads Message of Sustainability

Wild Planet Challenges Tuna Companies to Uphold Their Promises

McKinleyville, CaA few weeks ago, Bill Carvalho, challenged tuna companies like Bumble Bee, Starkist and Chicken of the Sea to switch to sustainable fishing methods. However, despite countless promises to adopt sustainable practices, these big name tuna brands have yet to walk the walk. As a result, Wild Planet a firm believer in leading by example, thought it appropriate to explain its own motivation for sustainability in hopes of inspiring others to do the same.

Wild Planet’s Founder, Bill Carvalho is a 20 year, seafood industry veteran with experience in nearly all areas of operations and responsibilities. His seafood company, Carvalho Fisheries is a major primary receiver and producer of a wide range of West Coast Seafood products. Although highly educated and knowledgeable about the seafood industry, at one point, Bill himself was unaware of the devastating impact humans have on our oceans and marine life. It wasn’t until a family outing to Monterey Bay Aquarium (MBA) in 2001 that his eyes were finally opened.

“I’ve spent most of my life around our oceans – they are extremely important to me; so I was completely stunned and horrified by an exhibit I saw at Monterey Bay Aquarium depicting underwater conditions and the decimation of fish species by destructive fishing methods,” said Bill Carvalho.

By the end of his visit, Bill had made a vow to no longer contribute to the decimation of our oceans and to instead become a part of the solution. “I’d like to think many individuals are simply unaware of the damage their fishing methods are causing. This is why a large part of our mission at Wild Planet is to educate consumers and other seafood companies of how and why they should operate sustainably. Yes, it’s requires extra thought and sacrifice (for both consumers and businesses) but if it saves our planet, isn’t it worth it?”

In 2004, inspired by his visit and MBA’s mission tagline, Bill founded Wild Planet Foods, a new seafood company that would source in compliance with MBA Seafood Watch guidelines. Since then, all of Wild Planet’s harvesting practices have remained 100% compliant with environmentalists’ Best Choices for Sustainability recommendations.

Eleven years later, these policies are paying off – for consumers, for fish species and for the planet as a whole. As a result of its sustainably practices, Wild Planet Foods has won several prestigious awards including Prevention’s Cleanest Packaged Food Awards (2015), Clean Eating’s Clean Choice Awards (2015), Men’s Health - Best Foods for Men (2014), Women’s Health - Supermarket Stars (2014), Men’s Fitness - 100 Healthiest Packaged Foods (2014) and many more. Most recently, Greenpeace, an international environmental organization working towards a green and peaceful future, deemed Wild Planet the most sustainable and ethical tuna brand in the U.S.

“I’m extremely proud of our company’s achievement and the impact that we’ve had on our environment. We’ve proved that a fully sustainable company – though it requires more effort – can have success. This considered, we hope other seafood companies soon switch to sustainable fishing methods and put an end to destructive practices that hurt our oceans. After all, we live in an ocean planet – and as the ocean’s go, so goes the planet.”
