LEROUX & LOTZ Technologies (LLT) signs contract with Eska Graphic Board B.V. for the construction of a rejects gasification facility

A  RENEWABLE ENERGY PROJECT

On February 6, 2015 LLT signed a contract with Eska Graphic Board B.V. for the design, manufacture and commissioning of a reject gasification facility in Hoogezand, the Netherlands. The commissioning of the plant is expected in the second half of 2016.

Eska Graphic Board B.V. is a world leader in the market for solid board. It uses 100% recycled paper to produce over 250,000 tonnes of graphic board per annum in its two state-of-the-art plants in Hoogezand and Sappemeer.  The produced Eskaboard® is sold to over 90 countries worldwide.

When waste paper is processed into solid board, residues in the form of mainly plastics are left over during the pulping process. These residues, known as rejects are currently transported off site for incineration. In the new gasification facility 25 000 tonnes of rejects will be treated each year to generate a syngas. This syngas is combusted in a new waste heat recovery boiler which will generate 16 ton per hour of 16 bar saturated steam. The steam will be used on site in the solid board production process.

With on-site energy recovery of the rejects, Leroux & Lotz Technologies gasification solution will annually save 18 million cubic meters of natural gas. This corresponds to the average annual consumption of 11,000 Dutch households. The implementation of this gasification unit will optimize the energy efficiency of the plant and will contribute to achieving the 2020 targets set for the Paper and Board sector of reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions.

ADVANCED CONVERSION TECHNOLOGY

The turn key gasification solution provided by LLT includes the complete “crane to stack” boiler island including the gasifier, recovery boiler, flue gas treatment - and integrates the storage and preparation of the fuel. LLT also provides the operating system for the installation.

The gasification technology benefits of LLT’s experience of over 30 years both in laboratory scale and industrial installations. Its circulating fluidized bed, air at atmospheric pressure, is ideal for energy recovery of complex solid fuel including RDF to deliver outputs to in excess of 5 MWth.

LLT has paid special attention to the design of the boiler and flue gas treatment systems to minimise air emissions in strict compliance with environmental regulation as well as to minimise the environmental footprint of the installation.

STRATEGIC PROJECT FOR LEROUX & LOTZ TECHNOLOGIES

For Patrick Blanc, Director of Leroux & Lotz Technologies Heat & Power, the contract awarded by Eska Graphic Board is a strategic project: "This first reference in the paper industry for our gasification system is a remarkable opportunity for the development of sustainable solutions for energy production on industrial sites. In addition to LLT’s conventional combustion technologies the gasification technology is available to be commercially deployed for thermal utilization of waste.”
