ORLANDO, May 26, 2017 — BullFrog's new Ultimate Performance Team stars world-class outdoor sports enthusiasts in land, water, and adventure — the exact audience served by Orlando-based BullFrog Sunscreen.

Joining BullFrog's first-ever Ultimate Performance Team to raise awareness about the need for guys to protect themselves from the sun's damaging UV rays are freestyle kayaker Nick Troutman, Major League Fishing bass fisherman Brent Chapman, outdoorsman Justin Reiter, and mountain biker Ryan Geiger.

All four athletes, all widely recognized for their sports accomplishments, are living the BullFrog life, passionately pursuing outdoor adventures, under the sun. The BullFrog Ultimate Performance Team will represent BullFrog in social media, providing exciting sports content, including video, which will also be amplified within their own social communities. 

BullFrog is building on last year's brand restage with activations that speak to male outdoor enthusiasts and their desire to gear up and live the active life. BullFrog's educational efforts to get the word out to male outdoor enthusiasts that UV protection is essential revolve around several stark statistics:

  • Men ages 15 to 39 are 55 percent more likely to die of melanoma than women in the same age group.
  • Over the past three decades, more people have had skin cancer than all other cancers combined.
  • One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime. 
  • Male outdoor enthusiasts overlook sun protection. (See survey results below.)

  • Nick Troutman.  Troutman is a freestyle kayak world champion, North American champion, and a five-time national champion. He is also a global expedition leader and GoPro Mountain Games gold medalist. He teaches kayaking to underprivileged youth in NYC. His life quote: "Try harder."
  • Brent Chapman.  A pro tournament bass fisherman, Chapman fishes at the highest level of bass fishing in the world, including the Bassmaster Elite Series and Major League Fishing. In addition to being 2012 BASS Master Angler of the Year, he is an accomplished big game hunter with both bow and firearms.
  • Justin Reiter. A multiple sports athlete, Reiter is proficient in randonee skiing, split boarding, dirt biking, surfing, fly fishing, and hiking. At age nine he got his first snowboard, and was so passionate about the sport that he slept with it. Traveling the globe with the SG Pro snowboard team, he was ranked sixth in the world. He has won more than a dozen national titles, including a World Cup podium, a Nor-Am Cup title, and a silver medal at the World Championships. He was a 2014 Olympian and is a member of the U.S. Snowboard Team.
  • Ryan Geiger.  A pro mountain biker who has won numerous time trial and criterium state championships, he is a two time U.S. National 24-Hour Team winner and multi-time State Cross Country Champion. A repeat USA Cycling National Team member, Geiger has traveled throughout Europe competing in World Cup races, and has won the Leadville 100 endurance race twice in the U19 category.

Survey of Sports Enthusiasts

A new survey of male outdoor enthusiasts ages 18-54 commissioned by BullFrog sunscreen found that while they may take great precautions in their sport, many outdoor enthusiasts overlook sun protection:

  • A majority of male outdoor sports enthusiasts perceive a greater risk of injury participating in their sport than from unprotected exposure to the sun's skin cancer-causing rays.
  • Two in 10 respondents do not use sunscreen at all. Of the remaining 80 percent who said they do use sunscreen, a majority (56%) use it only occasionally.
  • A mere 24 percent take serious precautions throughout the year, using sunscreen daily and reapplying it often.

A high-quality sunscreen — one that offers at least 30 SPF (sun protection factor) and 80 minutes of water and/or sweat resistance — is an essential component of any sports enthusiast's toolkit. "UV rays damage skin cells' DNA," Brevard, Florida-based dermatologist Dr. Richard C. Kirkpatrick said. He noted: "Skin cancers get a foothold when this damage affects the DNA of genes that control skin cell growth."

Kirkpatrick noted that getting the message across about the need for sun protection in outdoor sports is critical because of the large number of outdoor enthusiasts. Nearly half of all Americans — 48.4% — participated in at least one outdoor activity in 2015, which equates to 142.4 million participants, according to the "Outdoor Recreation Participation Topline Report" produced by the Outdoor Foundation®. He added: "A lot more education needs to be done about the dangers of sun damage and skin cancer among outdoor enthusiasts."

Survey Methodology

The study was conducted by GfK, using GfK KnowledgePanel™, an online probability-based panel designed to be representative of the U.S. general population, not just the online population. The study consisted of 1,000 interviews conducted December 9-11, 2016 among adults aged 18+ with a primary focus on males 18-54 who are outdoor sports enthusiasts. The margin of error is +/-3 percentage points.
